Get ready to strap yourselves in for a seven day blast of exceptional local and international animation in the 9th edition of the Melbourne International Animation Festival!
MIAF is one of the largest collections of independent animation gathered at any festival in the world, screening over 350 films in competitive, student, curated & retrospective programs. The festival aims to challenge and inspire audiences with thematic, visual and technical diversity from award winners, outstanding industry veterans and those wonderful newcomers who are exploring their talent on screen for the first time.
This will be your only opportunity in Australia to see such a comprehensive line-up of animated films - undoubtedly the most imaginative artform there is! Whether poetic, narrative driven, experimental, soley digital, comical, dramatic or inspired by the documentary form, MIAF's passion for showcasing outstanding works will culminate in a not to be missed celebration for filmmakers, lovers of animation and the general public alike.
Admission is restricted to an 18+ audience, except for special sessions designed for kids & teens. Please check our website for full details. Film classification regulations in Australia require all films to either be formally classified OR restricted to an audience of 18 years of age and over. Most festivals do not have the resources to do this and it is for this reason alone that we are not able to admit any person under the age of 18 years to the main MIAF screenings.
Single Tickets: Full $14 Concession $11
Festival Pass: Full $80 Concession $65
Animated 101 Sessions: $5
Best of the Next: $5
Panorama Programs: $5

The Beautiful Monster launch

Due to the recent rise of the use of gaming as an art form, the conventions of gaming are being tested and the user can often expect to be challenged. This has been stretched to the extent that they are not even experiencing a game in its traditional form. The students of the Animation and Interactive Media course at RMIT have conceptualized, designed and created an interactive experience that follows firmly embraces these ethics.
“Beautiful Monster” is a collaborative project that has been created within a five week period. This interactive experience is an abstract simulation of our ideological society, where notions of the ‘real’ are questioned.
This abstract space is divided into three nodes, which are represented by three intangible elements: sound, colour and light. There are no obvious rules in this space. This is due to the fact the primary theme is to create a feeling of confusion through the unfamiliar and abstract, yet beautiful, environment. The experience generates alternative frontiers beyond 3D game environment and evokes different emotions than what the users would be accustomed to. Users’ experience varies according to different elements working together.
The Beautiful Monster launch
Thursday 21st May
6:00pm - 9:00pm
Virtual Reality Centre, RMIT University City Campus, in Building 91, Ground floor

Mary & Max

news
Mary and Max is a claymation feature film from the creators of the Academy Award-winning short animation Harvie Krumpet.
It is a simple tale of pen-friendship between two very different people; Mary Dinkle, a chubby lonely 8-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz, a 44-year-old, severely obese, Jewish man with Asperger's Syndrome living in the chaos of New York.
Although the film is not out until 2009, an official website has been created, which although still under construction, is well worth checking out. The art and animation is beautiful and there are some great little behind the scenes videos that have been put up as well.
